About US

We provide holistic support and guidance throughout your university life at UMaT

The Counselling and Student Support (CSSU), formerly called Guidance and Counselling Unit, of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) was established in 2012 to help staff and students address personal, familial, and professional issues that may affect their lives and performance.

The Unit is a vital resource for students, offering psychological support, career advice, and personal development services. It addresses academic stress, mental health issues, and personal worries, fostering resilience and confidence. Collaborating with staff, parents, and student organizations, it ensures resources for professional and personal development, preparing graduates for life and leadership roles.

The Unit, from inception, has since grown on several fronts. The Unit at the beginning had one Counselling Psychologist. It, however, now has (four) certified Counselling Psychologists (with three at Tarkwa campus and one at Essikado campus in Takoradi at the School of Railways and Infrastructure and Development) and has one Senior Administrator who manages the Unit’s Secretariat. The Unit also three divisions, called Sections, that offer specialized services and address challenges of same

We believe that counselling is a confidential process designed to help the client address his/her concerns, come to a greater understanding of self, and learn effective personal and interpersonal skills to help thrive in life.

History and Background

Supporting Growth, Well-being, and Success Since 2012

The Counselling and Student Support (CSSU), formerly called Guidance and Counselling Unit, of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) was established in 2012 to help staff and students address personal, familial, and professional issues that may affect their lives and performance.

Mission

Our mission is to help transform lives and shape emotions of our clientele in order to achieve holistic health. Thus, we provide counselling services to students, staff and their families and the entire university community, from diverse backgrounds and varying socio-economic contexts.

Vision

Our vision is to make counselling readily accessible to all and sundry by providing a Centre where clients feel safe, respected and have a sense of belonging.

Our Core Values

Supportive Counselling for Every Voice

Every voice matters, and every story deserves to be heard. We offer inclusive counseling services that honor your unique perspective, helping you feel seen, valued, and supported. These principles are reflected in our core values:

Diversity

We appreciate and respect the diversity and cultural differences of our clients and take into account the many multidimensional aspects of their lives.

Empathy

We strive to identify with our clients’ situations and to have a sense of their feelings and emotions related to their needs. Offering a high level of empathy enhances trust and the quality of care that our clients deserve.

Environment

We provide a non-judgmental and confidential environment in which clients can engage the beauty and/or messiness of life with curiosity, perspective and creativity.

Meaningful connection

We create a safe space where clients are seen and heard.  We recognize the courage to engage in this connection.

Championing strengths

We believe that each individual is unique and has his own way of addressing resolutions. Thus, we believe in a client centred and wellness models that help clients empower themselves by focusing on what works for them and not in a systematic approach that provides a generic procedure on working on a treatment.
